Moving Abroad

If you've lived in Chattanooga for your whole life, it can be a pretty scary prospect to contemplate moving to a city in another state or country. How will you know what to do when your old Chattanooga condo is gone and you're faced with the prospect of purchasing an Old Mill, Toronto home for sale? What if you accidentally offend someone because their customs are different? How will your family back home find out if you're living in another country and something happens to you? You can find all these answers and more in our guide to moving abroad.

Research Research Research

We cannot stress enough the importance of doing research on a city or country that you are planning on moving to. Often times customs, gestures, slang, or even languages will be completely different to what you're used to in Chattanooga. If you're moving to Troncones, Mexico, start off by reading the Wikipedia page and a guide book to the area, then move on to a Spanish-English phrase book or a course in Spanish that will help you communicate. Wherever you're moving, make sure you know what type of currency they use, what language they speak, average costs for things, and any potential dangers you should avoid.

Be Prepared

Even if there's a booming market selling Georgetown, Ontario homes for sale and you want to get in on it, don't count on a job once you get there unless you've already been hired. When moving to a new city or country, make sure you bring enough currency to cover moving and living expenses for a few months in case you don't get a job right away. Have enough saved for a plane ticket home if things start to go south. You should start looking for a job weeks or months before you actually plan on leaving. You should also make sure to get any immigration permissions or visas you need before trying to enter another country. This may take months, so apply early.

Getting Help

There's no shame in asking for help. A newcomer to Lagrange NY Real Estate won't have any reference points that can help him or her tell a good price from a bad one or know which neighborhoods are to be avoided. Therefore, when Chattanooga real estate owners are ready to sell and move abroad they will need the expertise and services of agents from their new area. Look up local agents in the phone book or visit our resources page for a list of our associates in other cities. Don't try to go it alone unless you've done a lot of independent research or you've been to the city before.

Register With Appropriate Authorities

While the Vancouver real estate agent you hire to find you a condo will be able to handle the paperwork for that sale, you should never assume the simple fact that you are in a particular city is common knowledge to everyone. Make sure you give your new contact info to friends and family and also to the US Embassy or Consulate. That way if you get into any sort of trouble they are more likely to find out and come to your aid.
