Beauty is one thing, though, practicality still another. The answer is, quite a bit. That is great news both for current residents and for people thinking about making the city of Chattanooga their new home. It is a place where you can find work in any of the four major sectors, primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary. As we will see, most of these jobs are in the service sector, where you may find yourself at a job working with industrial water treatment chemicals or other tasks.
First, though, to primary industry. There are not too many medium sized cities in the United States that can still say they offer high paying, low skill jobs in resource extraction, but Chattanooga is one of them. The Vulcan company has a quarry which is right in city limits, and the mine is one of the most important factors in the Chattanooga economy. Positions include general labor, management, engineer, trades person, and so on.
Chattanooga is also one of the few cities in the United States not only to still have a solid secondary industry, but one which is thriving. Some very well known companies have plants in the area, including Coca-Cola and Wrigley. It is also a city where manufacturing is growing; soon there will be work at the strapping machine and other stations in the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, which will be the company's North American headquarters as well.
Then of course there are the dozens of different options open for people in a city with over 170,000 residents. There is work in sludge removal with the city, in the universities and other schools in the area, as well as with state and municipal governments.
All in all, Chattanooga has many opportunities for people looking for all sorts of different careers. If you just want to check valves in a plant for the rest of your life, earning an easy pay check, there is work for you. If you crave something a bit more challenging, there is something here for you too.
