The history of the name Chattanooga goes all the way back to its early days as a Native American fishing village. According to lore, "Chattanooga" means "big catch," but the specifics of the translation and origin of the name have been lost. Gone too are most of the original Native inhabitants, as they were driven west by the US government in the 1830s. Their historic journey, which has become known as the Trail of Tears, began in Chattanooga, Tennessee and ended in Oklahoma. The city is also well known as a Civil War battleground. Four campaigns and dozens of battles were fought in and around the city at sites that are still visited by thousands of tourists every year.
